The pageant title ‘Miss Universe’ was introduced in the year 1952. This annual international pageant contest today is run by Miss Universe organization based in the USA. The first Miss Universe contest was held on June 28, 1952. In 1952, Armi Kuusela of Finland became the first Miss Universe title winner. She was then 17 years old and was crowned by actress Piper Laurie. The first Miss Universe competition was held in California at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium.
For the first Miss Universe competition, there were only 30 contestants. The first Miss Universe contest was really a marketing stunt by Pacific Knitting Mills, a clothing company based in California. The idea was to start a pageantry contest of their own, after Yolanda Betbeze, the then Miss America title winner refused to pose for company’s swimwear. Today contestants more than 150 countries around the world compete for the Miss Universe title.
