The vibrant city of Harbin is preparing to welcome athletes and sports enthusiasts from across Asia for the 9th Asian Winter Games. From February 7-14, 2025, this prestigious multi-sport event will transform China’s “Ice City” into a hub of winter sports excellence, marking its second time as host city.
Competition Schedule Highlights
Ice Sports
The Harbin International Convention Exhibition and Sports Center will serve as the primary venue for ice sports, showcasing some of Asia’s finest athletic talent. The schedule features an exciting lineup:
Speed Skating (February 8-11) will demonstrate pure athleticism as competitors race against time on the long track. Meanwhile, the more tactical Short Track Speed Skating events (February 7-9) will bring edge-of-your-seat excitement with its pack-style racing format.
Figure Skating (February 11-13) promises to mesmerize audiences with its unique blend of athletic prowess and artistic expression. The competition will feature singles, pairs, and ice dance disciplines.
Team Sports on Ice
Two strategic team sports will span nearly the entire duration of the Games:
Ice Hockey (February 3-14) will see nations battle for supremacy in one of winter sports’ most dynamic team competitions. The Curling events (February 4-14) will test teams’ precision and tactical acumen on the ice.
Snow Sports
The mountains around Harbin will host various skiing disciplines:
Alpine Skiing (February 8-9) will feature high-speed events testing athletes’ technique and courage. Cross-Country Skiing (February 8-12) will challenge competitors’ endurance and determination across various distances.
Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard events (both February 8-13) will bring spectacular aerial maneuvers and exciting races to the Games. The Biathlon (February 11-13) will combine skiing prowess with marksmanship precision.
New Addition to the Program
For the first time in Asian Winter Games history, Ski Mountaineering (February 9-12) joins the program, adding an exciting element of alpine endurance sport to the competition schedule.
Opening and Closing Ceremonies
The Games will commence with a spectacular Opening Ceremony on February 7, celebrating the event’s motto “Dream of Winter, Love Among Asia” (冰雪同梦，亚洲同心). The Closing Ceremony on February 14 will conclude this celebration of Asian winter sports excellence.
Participation and Scale
The 2025 Asian Winter Games will welcome 1,275 athletes from 34 nations, competing across 64 events in 11 sports. This makes it one of the largest Asian Winter Games in history, reflecting the growing prominence of winter sports across the continent.
The carefully planned schedule ensures optimal conditions for athletes while providing spectators with multiple opportunities to witness various competitions throughout the Games’ duration.
