In 2024, Vishu falls on Sunday, April 14th. The auspicious time for preparing and viewing the Vishu Kani is between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM on this day. It is believed that waking up during this time and seeing the Vishu Kani brings good fortune and blessings for the entire year ahead.

The Ritual of Viewing Vishu Kani

On the morning of Vishu, family members wake up early and gather around the Vishu Kani. The elder member of the family, who has prepared the Kani, blindfolds each person and leads them to the Kani. It is believed that the first sight of the Vishu Kani sets the tone for the year ahead, bringing prosperity, happiness, and success. This traditional meal consists of various vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf, symbolizing the abundance of the harvest season The Vishu Kani typically consists of the following items:

  • Raw rice
  • Golden cucumber
  • Betel leaves
  • Arecanut
  • Yellow flowers (usually Konna or Cassia fistula)
  • Coins
  • A holy text (often the Bhagavad Gita)
  • A traditional lamp
